Not to repeat myself but I've taught gifted kids for 25 years. Part of our assessment process for services include meeting with parents and classroom teachers. I'm on the hunt for kiddos who are (in part) reading two-three years above peers. With older students 4th-6th this is fairly easy (except for the fact that some gifted kids are not pleasure readers). Older gifted readers will have read all the regulars--popular series as well as YA fantasy and science fiction series; some classics and even outlier titles like Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Animal Farm, Robert Ludlum thrillers, or Stephen King.
My problem was in discussions with parents and teachers of very young very precocious readers. These kids were in kindergarten through second grade and reading 4-5 years above grade level. I'd mention Charlotte's Web and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and then I was at a lost for good titles. Reading 4th grade books like Junie B. Jones or Captain Underpants was not good enough for me so I went on a hunt for recommended titles for these very young readers. I wanted the books to have rich themes and vocab

So for several months I asked everybody I knew--current gifted kids, old gifted kids, parents of gifted kids, classroom teachers, gifted ed teachers, and public and school librarians to send me good book titles. I have compiled the list. You can find the link to the list at the bottom right of my website A Different Place. If you have some MUST ADDS let me know. N
I have not read all these books. Be sure to let students self-select, you will be pleased with the results.

Thanks for the list. I passed it on to my wife, who is a school librarian. She was familiar with most of the list, but found one or two books she was not familiar with.
Kevin, Be sure if she has any adds she lets me know.
I am SO grateful for this list! I have a 6-year-old who has been reading since he was 3 and is very advanced, with good comprehension as well. He's been working his way through the Boxcar Children series and enjoys them but finishes in only a couple of hours. This list gives me a good idea of some more challenging options. I had never heard of the Lexile framework before but it seems very useful. Thanks, and I'll let you know if we come up with anything good to add!
You are welcome Rachael, glad it helps. N
I would love to access your list without setting up a DocStop or Google AdSense account. Any help? btw, LOVE your Mapping the World by Heart project. That's how I found you, googling reviews. :)
Actually I didn't know that the file was loaded to DocStop. I guess Blogger does that automatically. If you can't get a copy let me know and I will find one and email it to you.
Jason, You can find it here http://www.docstoc.com/docs/34126789/Books-for-Very-Young-Precocious-Readers or email me at nbosch at aol dot com and I'll send it to you.
Thank you for this list. I've been looking for these types of resources for our 4 year old, and this is very helpful.
Excellent news, I'm glad this is getting sorted!

Charlotte's Web was my favourite book as a child!

Thanks for this list. My son is 6, and has read many of the books on it, but I was thankful to find a handful of new ones to try. A series that we found amazing is the Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart... about gifted children who solve riddles on their adventures. Kept him excited for a long time! Thanks again!
Therefore, the impact of television violence on youth should be viewed in the context of the overall impact of media violence on youth. custom essays writing service
Thank you for sharing your insights and experiences. I teach 2nd grade at a Classical Christian school and am so anxious to see your list; however, I am unable to locate it online through the suggested links. Any suggestions?
Katie email me at nbosch@ aol.com and I'll sen it to you
DO you still have this list? I can't seem to get any of the links to it to work.
Teach Your Child to Read Today!
Reading is one of the most important skills one must master to succeed in life. It helps your child succeed in school, helps them build self-confidence, and helps to motivate your child. Being able to read will help your child learn more about the world, understand directions on signs and warnings on labels, allow them to discover reading as an entertainment, and help them gather information.
Learning to read is very different from learning to speak, and it does not happen all at once. There is a steady progression in the development of reading ability over time. The best time for children to start learning to read is at a young age - even before they enter pre-school. Once a child is able to speak, they can begin developing basic reading skills. Very young children have a natural curiosity to learn about everything. They are naturally intrigued by the printed texts they see, and are eager to learn about the sounds made by those letters. You will likely notice that your young child likes to look at books and thoroughly enjoys being read to. They will even pretend to behave like a reader by holding books and pretend to read them.
At what age can you start teaching a child to read? When they're babies? At 2 years old, 3, 4, or 5 years old, or wait until they're in school?
If you delay your child's reading skill development until he or she enters school, you are putting your child at risk...
Did you know that 67% of all Grade 4 students cannot read at a proficient level! According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, of those 67%, 33% read at just the BASIC level, and 34% CANNOT even achieve reading abilities of the lowest basic level!
There is a super simple and extremely effective system that will even teach 2 and 3 year old children to read.
This is a unique reading program developed by two amazing parents and reading teachers, Jim and Elena, who successfully taught their four children to read before turning 3 years old. The reading system they developed is so effective that by the time their daughter was just 4 years 2 months old, she was already reading at a grade 3 level. They have videos to prove it.

Their reading system is called Children Learning Reading, and it is nothing like the infomercials you see on TV, showing babies appearing to read, but who have only learned to memorize a few word shapes. This is a program that will teach your child to effectively decode and read phonetically. It will give your child a big head start, and allow you to teach your child to read and help your child develop reading skills years ahead of similar aged children.
This is not a quick fix solution where you put your child in front of the TV or computer for hours and hope that your child learns to "read"... somehow...
This is a reading program that requires you, the parent, to be involved. But the results are absolutely amazing. Thousands of parents have used the Children Learning Reading program to successfully teach their children to read.
All it takes is 10 to 15 minutes a day.
